The failure of EM stock prices to rally over the past 13 years is rooted in their companies’ inability to grow their profits and produce high return on equity (ROE). In a nutshell, EM equity underperformance versus the US and the euro area reflects poor relative profit dynamics. Critically, weak EM profitability and significant equity underperformance have been widespread and are not limited to large caps.
